Urging Mumbaikars to don their jogging shoes, Habitat for Humanity India in partnership with H-West Federation organized a half-marathon in Mumbai city on December 2, 2012. ‘MUST Run’, an initiative to highlight the dire state of housing in the country, comprised a number of events including a Half-Marathon, Veterans’ Run, Senior Citizens’ Walk, Youth Run, Wheelchair event for the physically challenged and School Children’s Run.

Over 2000 Mumbai-citizens wound their way through streets of Bandra, Khar and Santacruz to promote the cause of decent shelter for all.

Hill Spring International school student Niqat Patel who participated in the marathon shared what motivated him to run for Habitat – “Living in a stable safe house is very important moreover it is a basic necessity. I agreed to running for the cause when I found out that Habitat for humanity helps the under privileged achieve this necessity. The spirit of the marathon was amazing, it made 10km seem like a small distance. I would like to run every year.”

Eighteen volunteers from the U.S., Britain, and Japan took part in Global Village build in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district from December 3 – 14, 2012. They assisted in the construction of houses for two poor families at Bajhera village, experiencing the rigours of the countryside and winning the hearts of villagers.
The community was surprised by the gesture of the professionals, who, after traveling long distances, carried stones and bricks to the construction site, dug up the earth, prepared building materials and helped masons and labourers.

Cairolo, a retired nurse from the U.S., is happy to have helped the poor, making a small contribution to the construction of the houses. “My desire to bring about a change in the life of a poor man has been fulfilled after coming to India.”
For physician Leinen Crock, this is her second visit to India; she considers it a blessing to get an opportunity to serve the poor.

Retired engineer Barack Renchie had earlier served tsunami victims in Kerala, but shared that it was a wonderful experience to help build for those families without a roof over their heads.
Financial assistance has been made available for the construction of 80 low-cost houses and repairs to 200 houses in the district by Habitat for Humanity India.
